Paul Brereton


Paul studied Acoustical Engineering at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, UK.  


Paul spent 10 years working in the civil aircraft industry working to reduce noise (and vibration) in the passenger cabins of aircraft and the community noise during take-off and landing.


Since joining the Health and Safety Executive in 1989, Paul has spent over 25 years advising HSE’s Inspectors on the reasonable practicability of reducing risk for employees from noise, hand-arm and whole-body vibration exposure from industrial powered hand-tools, machinery and processes.  


Paul was an advisor during negotiation of the EU Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive and has contributed to the HSE and European guidance on hand-arm and whole-body vibration.  


Paul inspects the supply of new equipment against noise and hand-arm vibration requirements to minimize the hazards and report any remaining hazard according to the EU Machinery Directive and its elaborating harmonized CEN Standards.
