Steven Mischler


Dr. Steven Mischler is currently a senior research scientist for the dust, ventilation and toxic substances branch in the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, a division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). 


Dr. Mischler received his Ph.D. from the School of Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Public health. Since joining NIOSH in 2002, Dr. Mischler’s work has focused on issues associated with control and measurement of both coal mine dust and diesel particulate matter.  


Dr. Mischler started working with the personal dust monitor (PDM) in 2002 completing numerous field and laboratory studies from proof of concept through NIOSH certification of the commercial instrument. Most recently, Dr. Mischler developed and tested a new inlet for the PDM which is now used in all underground coal mines in the United States. 


Dr. Mischler continues to assist the mining industry with issues pertaining to implementation of the new coal mine respirable dust regulation and PDM sampling. Prior to joining NIOSH, Dr. Mischler was an industrial consultant working on industrial hygiene and air monitoring projects.
