Topic of Lecture: Current status and future effort of occupational stress study in China

Abstract:

1.Advance in occupational stress study in China

In 1990, researchers in China started to conduct the study on occupational (job) stress. Now there are 100 universities, institutes involved in this field. Since 1992,1000 papers or more has been published in China.

1.1The projects which have been conducted in China

On the borrowing of foreign occupational stress questionnaire into Chinese;  occupational stress and mental health; occupational stress and cardiovascular disease (factors);effect of occupational stress on neuroendocrine function and   immune function; molecular biology study of occupational stress factors; occupational stress and safety; physiological  and psychological vulnerability to  stress in  working populations; occupational stress and work ability; occupational stress and individual factors .

1.2The subjects who contained in previously research

Nurses and doctors; train, truck, and bus drivers, dispatchers; VDT (visual display terminals) operators; offshore and land oil production workers; teachers in middle school; policemen; saleswomen; managers; airport services designers; professional staff in institute; workers in chemical and aluminum factories, steelworks;building workers ;workers in the refrigerator assembly line.

1.3The instruments in stress researches

Work Ability Index ,The Maslach ’s Burnout Inventory ,WHOQOL-BREF , Occupational Stress Questionnaire ,  Generic Job Stress Questionnaire , Occupational Stress Indicator ,JOB Content Questionnaire , Effort-reward imbalance measure , McLean's  Job Stress Questionnaire , Occupational Stress Inventory Revised Edition ,Job Stress Survey , Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire .

2.The Problems in Occupational Stress Researches in China

Research designs: The study lacked the hypotheses of theoretical construct; the study wasn’t designed in accordance with subject’s special  characteristics, more cross-sectional studies, less cohort studies.

The study of occupational stress questionnaire: Understanding of stressful concept was unstructured and not all inclusive; translation of scales in foreign languages wasn’t accurately;   not acquired a better understanding of occupational stress model.

Statistical analysis: Frequently using single factor analysis, using few multiple-factor (multivariate) analyses, the power of test was dropped. Ignored the effect of confounding factors; The subject’s information was described incompletely.

3.The main effort of occupational stress research in the future

3.1 Developing Chinese instruments of occupational stress according with the social, cultural, and economical background in China.

3.2 To investigate stress status of typical working populations.

3.3To develop study and practice of occupational stressful prevention and intervention.
