She has more than 30 years work experience on the design and research of HAVC and environmental engineering. She has presided over the design work of more than 20 laboratory buildings about science, education, culture and health in different stages, such as the physical and chemical, biochemical, BSL-2/BSL-3/BSL-4, and laboratory animal buildings, etc. The main projects include the Science Building of Peking University (including four laboratory buildings), Science and Teaching Building of Minzu University of China, National Animal Disease Biology Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, relocation project of National Institute for Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products (including seven laboratory buildings), Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine, Laboratory Animal Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Laboratory Animal Center of Research Institute for Food and Environment in Chinese Center For Disease Control And Prevention, and China Agricultural Biosecurity Science Center, etc. She has published a number of publications related to the laboratory.


Topic of Lecture: Requirements and control of laboratory environment


Abstract: The characteristic of science laboratories is that at work place there may be contaminants, such as organic solvent, inorganic acid/alkali and particulate matter, and may exist risk factors like thermal, electromagnetic or nuclear radiation. The requirements of experimenter, laboratory apparatus and natural of the experiments, as well as related national regulations should be taken into account, when determine the laboratory environmental conditions and parameters.

The common practice to eliminate contaminants in the laboratory to meet hygiene standards is to dilute and exchange air in laboratory with outdoor fresh air. However, recently due to the poor air quality and high level of PM2.5  in some area of China, outdoor fresh air must be filtered before entering laboratory. Otherwise, volatile harmful gases is removed at the cost of increasing the concentration of fine particulate matter, which is not acceptable. When PM2.5 level of outdoor air is 300μg/m3, the level of air filter has to be at least F8 to ensure incoming air can reach standard. If outdoor air is filtered by electron-static precipitator, ozone concentration may be excessive, and method to remove ozone must be considered.

To ensure that the laboratory meets hygiene and environment standards, two-level control system needs to be used. First level control system includes Fume hood, local exhaust hood, biological safety cabinets etc. , aiming at eliminating contaminants quickly and in short distance, and minimizing polluted area. Second control system, consists of laboratory ventilation and maintaining a pressure balance. Its purpose is to dilute and and exchange the air pollution inside laboratory to make sure the overall indoor environment meets hygienic standards.

Fume hood can adapt filter category-unrelated products, whose ventilation is circulated indoors completely. The prerequisites are that fume hood is equipped with activated carbon molecular filters and air particle filters to absorb the majority of the chemical gas; chemical matters used in experiment can be filtered effectively; filter life can reach a certain amount of time. Manufacture needs to determine the applicability with the help of questionnaires before adopting it. To avoid atmosphere be polluted by laboratory exhaust, exhaust needs to be treated before discharging into the atmosphere. Exhaust treatment method needs to be customized according to the nature of pollution.
